WEEDSPORT, NY (September 11, 2024) – The final event of Weedsport Speedway’s 2024 season saw fantastic racing action across four divisions as Stewart Friesen, Jordan Thomas and Marc Minutolo joined Richard Murtaugh (full story separately) as winners during Stirling Lubricants Cavalcade Cup Weekend.
Friesen would dominate the night’s 75-lap, $6,000 to win, Modified main event from the pole position, leading every circuit on the way to the victory. The win was Friesen’s second of the season at Weedsport, pairing with his $10,000 score in the Hall of Fame 100.
Alex Payne advanced to the runner-up position and appeared to have something for Friesen around the halfway point of the event, but his advances would fade as Friesen sped away. Jimmy Phelps, Erick Rudolph and Jack Lehner filled the top five as Dalton Slack, Darren Smith, Larry Wight, Brian Calabrese and Ronnie Davis III completed the top ten.
Qualifying heats were won by Friesen, Zach Payne and Alex Payne.
Two months removed from a heartbreaking last lap loss; Jordan Thomas put it all together on Sunday to claim the ESS Sprint Car portion of the Cavalcade Cup. Thomas chased down early race leader Logan Crisafulli to take the top spot in lapped traffic and never looked back on his way to a redeeming victory.
Recent Brewerton Speedway winner, Crisafulli, had another great run to take second ahead of a hard charging Larry Wight on the podium. Fulton winner, Joe Trenca, took fourth in front of Matt Tanner in the top five.
The front ten positions were filled with Jordan Poirier, Danny Varin, Chris Hile, Jason Barney and Jonathan Preston.
Heat races were on by Wight, Hile and Tanner. The Dash was claimed by Chase Moran with Davie Franek taking the win in the B-Main.
A large field of Empire Street Stocks made the trip to Weedsport on Sunday for the first time in many years and they did not disappoint as Marc Minutolo, Shane Wolfe and Jimmy Grant battled door to door through the duration of the event.
Grant and Wolfe would eventually find trouble, while Minutolo would put on a show from the tenth starting position, passing the front nine runners to take the lead and storm to his third career win at Weedsport.
CJ Guererri would come on late for second ahead of Mike Welch, Damian Long, and Earl Zimmer, who started in the 20th position.
Heat races were won by Grant, Wolfe, Guererri and Gene Sharpsteen. Nate Peckham took the win in the night’s consolation.
