WEEDSPORT, NY – (Bobby Sweeney) – Larry Wight capped off his hectic weekend at Weedsport Speedway with his first Big Block Modified triumph at the track, taking down Anthony Perrego in a late-race battle for the win.
Wight got a great start from his P2 starting position, jumping out front over Perrego and Tim Fuller. Perrego did not let Wight out of his sights through the early stages, with Wight’s lead hovering around a second and a half through the first ten laps. As the laps clicked off, Perrego and Fuller seemed to be gaining a small amount of speed, with Wight entering heavy lapped traffic.
By lap 20, Wight’s lead was all but gone. Perrego’s first swing came on lap 24, diving under Wight but unable to complete the pass. Since getting to the inside of Wight did not work, Perrego switched to the top. After a few laps of building momentum, Perrego slipped by Wight to be scored the leader on lap 31.
Perrego’s time up front was short-lived, as Wight regained the top spot the next time by. In the final laps, Perrego could not find a way back by Wight, as Wight reached the checkered flag first to grab the win. Fuller, who was right behind this fight for the win the whole time, slipped by Perrego on the final corner to steal second. Perrego came home third, with Chad Phelps and Ronnie Davis III completing the top five.
“The lapped cars were really running the bottom, and it seemed about halfway through the race, I couldn’t make up any time through the middle,” Wight stated. “I was trying to get around Beardsley, then I saw Perrego show his nose. I figured we were going to hunker down here and let him try and get around me. It seemed like every time Beardsley missed the bottom, I wasn’t close enough to fill it, but it was good racing. Anthony and I were inches apart for five laps or more.”
As previously mentioned, Wight’s weekend was wildly busy. On Saturday, Wight charged from 17th to 7th in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series feature, then hopped in the 358-Modified to run from 13th to the runner-up spot. On Sunday, Wight finished sixth in the Sprint Car after starting fourth, then won the Big Block feature from the outside pole. A net total of 20 cars passed for position in four features in two days.
“The track was phenomenal, it was racy, it was smooth, and can’t ask for anything better,” noted Wight. “After running the Sprint Car, this was a real good cap on the weekend. That was only the fourth time I’ve been in the Sprint Car this year. To run with those guys with the 360, this is the track to do it at if we were going to try it, and we held on with them. We could have been a little bit better, but I’ll take that.”
