WEEDSPORT, NY (August 31, 2020) – A pair of second place finishes in Sunday’s PRO Clone 360 Kart Cup Twin 20’s, presented by Pit Stop Convenience Stores, was enough to declare Missy Bootes the 2020 Kart Cup champion at Weedsport Kartway.
Bootes trailed Dan Marsden to the checkered flag in Twin #1 and took second in Twin #2, just .022-seconds behind David Hackett Jr., in an incredible four-wide photo finish. The combined finishes for Bootes were enough for her to earn the day’s $500 bonus, by just two points over Marsden.
With $2,700 on the line, 29 drivers attempted to qualify for the PRO Clone 360 Kart Cup Twins, with Richard Murtaugh setting fast time on the afternoon with a new track record lap of 10.504-seconds.
However, it was Jared Costello that would jump to the early lead in Twin #1, amazingly lapping all the way up to 5th position in only 10-laps. Unfortunately for Costello, his tires would give out after a caution at the halfway point of the race, sending the No. 55 into a spin in the first turn and eventually to the pit area.
Marsden would then inherit the lead in the No. 81 and drive to the $500 win in Twin #1 over Bootes, Jamie Shutts, Josh Hare and Chris Pier.
The lineup for Twin #2 would see a 12-kart inversion based on time trial and Twin #1 finishes, putting Devin McGill and Chris Natoli at the front of the field.
Natoli would jump out front at the green and run away from the field while Shutts, Marsden, Bootes and Costello would need to charge from the mid-pack.
While making their way through the pack, Costello climbed the back bumper of Bootes in turn three resulting in a caution flag and each kart going to the tail of the field. However, with Natoli still running away out front, the duo wasted little time getting back to the front of the pack in second and third.
After a pair of late cautions it seemed clear the race would be a shootout between Natoli and Bootes at the finish, and it was – plus two.
With Natoli seeing the checkered flag waving out of turn four, the No. 33 broke free giving Bootes a chance to fight to his inside. While Natoli and Bootes banged doors coming to the checkered, it gave the outside lane to Hackett and the extreme inside lane to Marsden. All four drivers would come to the line side by side, with Hackett somehow edging Bootes by just .022-seconds for the $500 victory.
After leading the majority of the race, Natoli would settle for third ahead of Marsden and Nick McGill.
The combined finish from each Twin would see the top ten drivers earn a payout including Bootes, Marsden, Hackett, Shutts, Pier, Chance Weaver, Nick McGill, Natoli, Hare and Devin McGill.
Aside from the PRO Clone Kart Cup, there were a number of point races on the line Sunday as well.
Bootes would earn another victory in Clone Light over Murtaugh, Hackett, Madison Myers and Thomas Montgomery.
After setting his new track record, Murtaugh also earned his second Clone Heavy win of the season over a hard charging Jude Parker, Montgomery, Hare and Nick McGill.
With a top five in Clone Heavy already under his belt, McGill would come on late to win Clone Super Heavy, yet again. After setting fast time, Justin Pier would take second ahead of Joe Isabell, Jordan Sullivan and Logan Winn.
Wyatt Mullen was a runaway winner in Jr. Red Clone ahead of James Kreidler and Penelope Bartlett.
Ayden Silvernail topped Jr. Green Clone for the second race in a row over Savannah Simmons and Grayson Adderley.
Parker Allen continued his dominance in Jr. Purple Clone with another victory, but was chased closely to the line by Genavieve Bartlett. Sam Heffner would finish the podium positions.
Seth Whitney topped a stout field in Jr. Blue Clone ahead of Owen Bird and Brittney Hackett.
For the second race in a row, Logan Crisafulli was the winner in Jr. Unrestricted over Whitney and Bird.
Weedsport Kartway returns to action on Sunday, September 20 for the third round of the Super Kart Series, which will feature point events for Weedsport’s eight standard divisions. Joining the day’s racing will be the 3rd annual James Shutts Memorial Clone Super Heavy event, paying $722 to win. A $500 PRO Clone 360 main will also be on the card.
