Dave Marcuccilli Earns First Spano Container Sportsman Shootout Series Win of 2018!
WEEDSPORT, NY (May 30, 2018) – Beautiful sunny skies greeted race fans and race teams at Weedsport Speedway on Memorial Day for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified Heroes Rememebred 100 and the Spano Container Sportsman Shootout Series 25 presented by DC Rauscher.
The Sportsman main event saw Kevin Root lead early on before a hard charging Dave Marcuccilli came on to steal the point with only five laps to go, earning his first Weedsport win of the season.
Will Shields led the event early on from his pole starting position before Root snagged the lead on the top of turns one and two on lap 6.
With Root out front, Shields was now left to defend the runner-up position from Marcuccilli who was mounting a charge. By lap-8, Marcuccilli found the room he needed on the low side out of turn four in order to begin giving chase to Root out front.
Marcuccilli closed on Root by lap-10 with the yellow lights then coming on for a slowing Andrew Smith.
On the restart, Root and Marcuccilli immediately went to battle with Marcuccilli testing the high side while Root rolled low.
The two Sportsman veterans battled side-by-side for several laps, before Marcuccilli finally edged ahead at lap-20.
While Marcuccilli used the high line to gain the advantage, once in the lead he quickly dropped to the bottom, protecting his lane while cruising to his first Spano Container Sportsman Shootout Series win of the season.
Root came home in second ahead of Matt Guererri, Shields, Connor Cleveland, Zach Sobotka, Jessica Power, Ben Wheeler, Kyle Inman and Bob Henry in the top ten.
Sportsman heat races were won by Sobotka, Power, Cleveland and Matt Guererri with consolation wins going to Tyler Corcoran and Corey Barker.
The Super DIRTcar Series Heroes Remembered 100 was won by Stewart Friesen. Full results and a recap of that event can be found at www.superdirtcarseries.com.
Weedsport Speedway’s next event will see the All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprints on hand along with the Big Block Modifieds on Sunday, June 10.
